The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has dismissed the false claims circulating on social media regarding the replacement of its Chairman, Professor Mahmood Yakubu, by Prof. Bashiru Olamilekan, as allegedly appointed by President Bola Tinubu.

The misinformation, which spread widely on Monday via a WhatsApp broadcast, falsely stated: “INEC Chairman Prof. Mahmood Yakubu has been replaced with Prof. Bashiru Olamilekan by President Tinubu.”

In response to the claims, Mr. Rotimi Oyekanmi, the Chief Press Secretary to the INEC Chairman, issued a statement urging the public to disregard the report, calling it “false and misleading.”

“Please, disregard. It is not true,” Oyekanmi clarified in a brief press statement.

Professor Yakubu is currently serving his second and final term as INEC Chairman, which is set to end later this year.
