The Federal Government has announced a full closure of the Ijora Bridge in Lagos, beginning Saturday, April 27, to carry out essential repair works.
According to Mrs. Olukorede Kesha, the Federal Controller of Works in Lagos, the repairs will focus on replacing approximately 50 defective bearings beneath the bridge deck across three sections. This work is part of the final phase of a long-awaited repair project.
Kesha highlighted the bridge’s importance as a key link to Apapa, home to Nigeria’s major seaports, and emphasized that the repairs were crucial for commuter safety and to prevent further structural damage.
Motorists will be rerouted through alternative routes, including the Seven Up Roundabout for those heading towards Apapa and through Costain and Iganmu for heavy-duty trucks.
While acknowledging the inconvenience of the closure, Kesha reassured the public that the repairs, which will be the first major intervention since the bridge’s construction, are necessary to ensure its long-term safety and functionality.
