Former Imo State Governor, Emeka Ihedioha, has formally joined the African Democratic Congress (ADC), months after his exit from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in April 2024.
Ihedioha had announced in July 2025 that the ADC would become the new political platform for him and his supporters. On Monday, he completed his registration at Mbutu Ward in Aboh-Mbaise Local Government Area of Imo State, where he was issued ADC membership card number 001.
The registration exercise was conducted by the party’s ward secretary, Obinna Opara, while the ward chairman, Alex Ahamuefula, formally presented the membership card to the former governor. Party leaders, stakeholders, and community leaders were present to witness the event.
Speaking after the registration, Ihedioha said his decision to join the ADC was deliberate and based on his belief in the party’s commitment to accountability, clear values, and service to the people. He noted that both Nigeria and Imo State need leadership that places public interest at the centre of governance.
“Our people want leadership that listens, serves, and puts the common good above personal interest,” he said.
“I am convinced that the ADC provides a credible platform to pursue these goals.”
The former deputy speaker of the House of Representatives explained that registering at the ward level underscored his commitment to grassroots politics and inclusive political engagement.
National party officials present at the event included Bon Unachukwu, ADC national vice chairman for the South-East; Maigari Kasimu, deputy diaspora coordinator; and Uko Nkole, coordinator of the former legislators’ forum.
Unachukwu described Ihedioha’s entry into the party as a major boost to the ADC in the South-East and nationally, noting that the party was pleased to welcome a former governor and seasoned public servant.
Also present was the Imo State ADC chairman, James Okoroma, who led members of the state executive committee to receive Ihedioha. Okoroma said the former governor’s decision to join the party would further strengthen the ADC in Imo State.
