IGP Warns Officers Against Unlawful Detentions, Rights Violations

Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, has issued a stern warning to officers of the Nigeria Police Force on the need to uphold fundamental human rights.

In a statement on Sunday, police spokesperson Muyiwa Adejobi said the IGP cautioned officers to adhere strictly to legally stipulated detention periods and avoid unlawful or prolonged detentions that could erode public trust.

Egbetokun emphasized that officers who violate these principles will face serious consequences.

“The Nigeria Police Force is committed to ensuring that all individuals in custody are treated with respect and in accordance with the law,” the statement read.

He also called for a culture of accountability within the force, urging officers to maintain professionalism, integrity, and respect in their interactions with the public.

This move aligns with the police leadership’s broader vision of fostering a rights-driven and community-friendly approach to law enforcement.
