The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, has condemned the recent mob attack on travelers along the Uromi-Obajana Road in Edo State, where victims were falsely accused of being kidnappers and subjected to jungle justice.
According to Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, the victims, who claimed to be hunters, were intercepted by a local vigilante group and found in possession of 19 locally fabricated firearms. Unsatisfied with their explanation, the vigilantes took the law into their own hands, leading to tragic consequences.
The Edo State Police Command swiftly intervened, restoring order and arresting 14 suspects, while a manhunt continues for others involved.
To ensure a thorough and impartial investigation, the IGP has directed the Force Criminal Investigation Department (FCID), led by DIG Sadiq Abubakar, to take over the case.
“While we condemn this act of jungle justice, we also reiterate that the unlawful possession of firearms is a serious criminal offense under Nigerian law. Individuals with unlicensed weapons should either surrender them or follow due process for licensing,” the IGP stated.
He urged the public to allow law enforcement agencies to investigate the matter and warned against extrajudicial actions. The police have vowed that all perpetrators will face the full weight of the law.
