The Honduran Attorney General announced Monday night that an international arrest warrant has been issued for former President Juan Orlando Hernández, just days after he was pardoned by U.S. President Donald Trump and released from federal prison.
Attorney General Johel Antonio Zelaya Alvarez said in a statement on social media that he has directed Honduran government agencies and Interpol to execute the warrant. Hernández is wanted on money laundering and fraud charges tied to his first presidential campaign more than ten years ago.
The move marks a dramatic escalation in the long-running legal saga surrounding Hernández, who has faced years of scrutiny in both Honduras and the United States over alleged corruption and links to criminal organizations.
Authorities have not disclosed when or where Hernández may be detained, but issuing an international warrant underscores the Honduran government’s determination to pursue the case — despite his recent U.S. pardon and release.
