Former England midfielder Steve Hodge has the shirt, which he traded with Maradona after Argentina won the match 2-1. Thanks to two goals from the forward, the second of which is regarded as one of the best ever scored.
It was Hodge’s attempted back pass that Maradona chased before using his hand to push the ball past England goalkeeper Peter Shilton for the first goal. Following Maradona’s death in 2020, Hodge said the shirt was not for sale.
According to Guinness World Records, Pele’s jersey from the 1970 World Cup final is the most expensive soccer shirt ever sold at auction. In 2002, it sold for £157,750, more than three times the projected price.
Maradona is widely regarded as one of the greatest players of all time, having guided Argentina to a World Cup triumph in 1986. He died of heart arrest at the age of 60.
