After four police officers were killed in Enugu’s capital, another four were reportedly killed at a checkpoint on the outskirts of the city 48 hours later.
According to reports, the gunmen stormed the checkpoint at Obeagu in Enugu South Local Government Area, murdering at least four people. Attempts to contact the police have been unsuccessful.
The killing of security personnel has become all too prevalent in the country’s southeast. Aside from attacks on security personnel, terrorists have attacked police and other agency formations.
While many believe the attacks were planned by the outlawed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), the group driving efforts for the region’s independence, the group has denied culpability, calling the claims “false.”
