Greenland Dispute Set to Dominate Davos as Trump Reiterates Push for U.S. Ownership

The growing standoff between the United States and its NATO allies over the future of Greenland is expected to feature prominently at this week’s World Economic Forum in Davos, after President Donald Trump again declared that American ownership of the Arctic island is “imperative” to global security.

In a social media post on Monday, Trump said he had spoken with NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte and agreed to convene a meeting of relevant parties in Davos. He said he made clear that “Greenland is imperative for national and world security” and insisted “there can be no going back” on the issue.

Greenland is a self-governing territory within the Kingdom of Denmark. Trump first raised the idea of acquiring the mineral-rich island during his first term in office, proposals that Danish and Greenlandic leaders have consistently rejected.

European officials continued to push back against Trump’s renewed campaign, emphasizing coordination among allies and respect for sovereignty.

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said she met with a bipartisan U.S. congressional delegation to discuss Russia’s war in Ukraine and tensions surrounding Greenland. She said she stressed the need to “unequivocally respect the sovereignty of Greenland and of the Kingdom of Denmark,” calling it essential to maintaining strong transatlantic relations.

Von der Leyen added that the European Union remains ready to work closely with the United States, NATO and other partners, in cooperation with Denmark, to advance shared security interests. She also warned that tariffs would harm transatlantic trade and investment, which she described as vital to both the U.S. and European economies.

Meanwhile, Danish and Greenlandic ministers traveled to Brussels on Monday for meetings with NATO Secretary-General Rutte. Following the discussions, Danish Defense Minister Troels Lund Poulsen said the Greenland dispute presents a challenge “fundamentally to Europe and also to the future of NATO,” adding that Rutte is fully aware of the sensitivity and seriousness of the situation.
