Jurgen Klopp suffered his first defeat as Germany manager on Sunday as Greece secured a historic 1-0 victory in Augsburg.

Dimitrios Kourbelis scored the decisive goal in the 74th minute, with his deflected low drive beating the German defence to hand Greece their first-ever win over Germany.

Germany dominated possession, controlling almost 80 per cent of the ball in the first half, but struggled to create clear chances against a well-organised Greek defence.

The hosts improved after the break, with Felix Nmecha firing wide in the 54th minute after Greece goalkeeper Konstantinos Tzolakis had tipped a Joshua Kimmich free-kick over the bar.

Greece also threatened when Kimmich lost possession in the 66th minute, but substitute Fotis Ioannidis shot narrowly wide.

The victory gave Greece back-to-back wins after their 2-1 victory over Serbia on Thursday, taking them to six points from two matches and top of the group. Germany have one point from their opening two games.

Klopp, who took charge in July following Germany’s early World Cup exit, is still searching for his first win after two matches. Germany will face Serbia on Thursday before travelling to Greece three days later.

Elsewhere, the Netherlands defeated Serbia 2-1, with Mexx Meerdink scoring twice on his second international appearance to secure new manager Xavi Hernandez’s first win.

In Group A4, defending champions Portugal maintained their perfect start with a 2-1 win away to Norway. Joao Felix opened the scoring before Erling Haaland equalised, while Goncalo Ramos restored Portugal’s lead with a chip. Cristiano Ronaldo remained on the bench throughout.

Portugal lead the group with six points from two matches, while Denmark earned their first points with a 2-0 victory over Wales.

In Group B3, Ireland defeated Israel 3-0 after scoring twice within three minutes early in the first half.
