Governor Uba Sani of Kaduna State has pardoned 110 prisoners at the Kaduna Correctional Centre in commemoration of this year’s Democracy Day.
The announcement was made during his visit to the correctional facility yesterday. Exercising the power of prerogative of mercy as conferred by Section 212 of the 1999 Constitution (as amended), Governor Sani emphasized the significance of this act.
“I am releasing a total number of 110 convicts today to mark the celebration of our one year in office and, more importantly, to celebrate 2024 June 12, Democracy Day,” Sani declared. Among the pardoned, 22 convicts received full pardons.
The remaining 88 inmates included those with the option of fines ranging from N10,000 and above, and those required to pay compensation to their victims, ranging from N150,000 and above. Some cases involved both fines and compensation.
Governor Sani urged the pardoned individuals to avoid returning to criminal activities and emphasized the importance of law and order in society. He reiterated his administration’s commitment to justice and fairness, aiming to provide relief and support to the people of Kaduna.
“We strongly believe that there is inherent goodness in every person. We believe that everybody deserves a second chance,” Sani remarked.
He encouraged the pardoned inmates to acquire skills and pledged state support to help them reintegrate and contribute positively to society.
