Governor Hochul Declares Drought Warning for 15 New York Counties, Urges Water Conservation

New York Governor Kathy Hochul elevated 15 counties, including New York City, to drought warning status on Monday due to prolonged dry conditions and declining water supply levels.

The affected counties include Bronx, Delaware, Dutchess, Greene, Kings, New York, Orange, Putnam, Queens, Richmond, Rockland, Schoharie, Sullivan, Ulster, and Westchester. Residents in these areas, particularly those relying on private groundwater wells, are urged to conserve water during the coming weeks.

“Recent unseasonably warm weather and lack of precipitation have led to dry conditions for many counties in New York, resulting in Hudson Valley and New York City area counties being elevated to drought warning status and a statewide drought watch,” Governor Hochul said.

In New York City, residents can find water-saving tips by calling 311 or visiting the city’s Water Savings Tips website at [nyc.gov/savewater](http://nyc.gov/savewater).

The Drought Monitor reports that much of the Tri-State area, including New York City, is experiencing severe drought conditions, characterized by high fire risk, potential water shortages, and possible water use restrictions. Extreme drought conditions have also been reported in Ocean County and parts of South Jersey.

Mayor Eric Adams encouraged New Yorkers to take water conservation seriously. “Our city vehicles may look a bit dirtier, and our subways may look a bit dustier, but it’s what we have to do to stave off a more serious drought emergency. New Yorkers always look out for each other, and together, we’ll get through this,” he said.

There are four drought advisory levels in New York: watch, warning, emergency, and disaster. With the region under a warning, officials emphasize the importance of immediate action to reduce water usage and mitigate the risk of further escalation.
