Gov. Sanwo-Olu Urges Nigerians to Protect, Sustain Democracy

Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has called on Nigerians, particularly residents of Lagos, to safeguard and uphold the country’s democratic government.
This appeal was made on Tuesday in a statement by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Mr. Gboyega Akosile, in commemoration of June 12, which marks the 25th anniversary of uninterrupted democratic governance in Nigeria.
Governor Sanwo-Olu emphasized the importance of collective effort in sustaining democracy, ensuring that the sacrifices of the nation’s founding fathers and democracy heroes, who fought for Nigeria’s return to a democratic path on May 29, 1999, are not in vain.
Reflecting on the progress made in the nation’s democracy, the governor urged Nigerians to collaborate in building “our dream country and the future we want.” He highlighted June 12 as a symbol of Nigerians’ aspirations for unity, hope, improved living standards, and true democratic practices. Additionally, he paid tribute to the late Chief MKO Abiola (GCFR), the symbol of the democratic struggle, and other activists and Nigerians who contributed to the restoration of democratic governance.
“I wish all Nigerians and Lagosians in particular a Happy Democracy Day, as this year’s June 12 also marks the 31st anniversary of the historic June 12, 1993 presidential election and 25 years of democratic governance,” Sanwo-Olu stated. He emphasized the need to honor the memories of Chief MKO Abiola and other heroes of democracy.
The governor encouraged all Nigerians, especially Lagos residents, to remain steadfast, protect the young democracy, stay united, and maintain faith in President Bola Tinubu’s “Renewed Hope” agenda, which aims to ensure that all Nigerians benefit from the dividends of democracy. He also reiterated Lagos State’s commitment to the THEMES+ development agenda, focusing on key sectors to improve the quality of life for residents.
“Democracy Day must remind us of the importance of joining hands to build the future we want. As responsible citizens, let us do everything possible to support the government at the Federal, State, and Local Government levels to sustain our democracy. Happy Democracy Day, Nigeria,” Governor Sanwo-Olu concluded.
