Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, has assured residents that he will fully implement the Supreme Court’s ruling on the disputed local government elections once he receives and reviews its Certified True Copy (CTC).
The apex court on Friday nullified the October 5, 2024, local government election in the state—a decision Fubara said he disagreed with but would respect as a law-abiding leader.
In a state broadcast from Port Harcourt on Sunday, the governor emphasized that while his administration upholds constitutional governance, due legal processes must be followed before acting on the verdict.
“I have met with my legal team, and they have assured me that the certified true copy of the judgment may be available by Friday, March 7, 2025,” Fubara stated.
He pledged that once the document is reviewed, his government would act accordingly “without reservations” in the interest of the state’s progress.
In compliance with the ruling, Fubara directed all Heads of Local Government Administration (HLGAs) to assume control of the 23 local government councils immediately, pending the conduct of fresh elections by the Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission (RSIEC). He also ordered outgoing local government chairmen to hand over to the HLGAs by Monday, March 3, 2025.
Amid rising political tensions, the governor urged residents to remain calm and go about their daily activities peacefully, assuring them of his unwavering commitment to stability and good governance.
