Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun has assured that his administration is committed to implementing the new minimum wage as a priority. Speaking during a meeting with the leadership of Organised Labour in Abeokuta, Abiodun praised workers for their role in the state’s economic growth and pledged that Ogun would not lag behind in the wage implementation process.
He highlighted the state’s efforts to boost revenue without placing undue pressure on citizens, stating, “We should be creative, more efficient, block loopholes, and increase our revenue so that we can afford to pay the new minimum wage comfortably.”
Abiodun also noted that Ogun’s annual budget had increased from less than N400 billion at the start of his administration to N703 billion, with an 80% performance rate, and revealed plans for a N1 trillion budget next year. He stressed the need for continued partnership with Organised Labour, which he credited for fostering economic progress.
Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) State Chairman, Hameed Benco, commended the governor for involving Organised Labour in decision-making but called for price regulation to counter exploitation by market vendors. He also suggested providing transportation for workers and students to ease the challenges caused by fuel subsidy removal. Trade Union Congress (TUC) Chairman, Akeem Lasisi, recommended that workers be allowed to work from home until the economic situation improves.
