Former White House National Climate Adviser Gina McCarthy called any effort by the incoming Trump administration to roll back funds from the Inflation Reduction Act (IRA) a “fool’s errand” in a call with U.S. climate leaders on Friday, where they outlined continued goals for climate progress.
“We’ll do everything in our power to stop efforts to undo the progress we’ve made, to amplify local action, and to drive private sector investments, filling any federal leadership gaps to meet our global commitments,” said McCarthy, who now co-chairs the U.S. climate coalition America Is All In. “We stand ready to work with both Democrats and Republicans to protect the Inflation Reduction Act and keep our federal agencies engaged and secure.”
Representatives from America Is All In, the U.S. Climate Alliance, and Climate Mayors participated in the call, sharing their strategies for “continuing to protect and build on climate progress despite the incoming Trump administration.”
McCarthy emphasized that billions of dollars in public and private clean energy investments from the IRA have significantly benefited Republican-led districts.
“Federal policies have driven $910 billion in public and private investments nationwide, creating facilities to produce batteries, clean heavy industries, and deliver more renewable energy,” McCarthy noted, adding that over 330,000 high-paying jobs have been created, many in Republican districts. “That’s why members of Congress are eager to attend ribbon-cuttings. The undeniable benefits of clean energy for businesses, local economies, and all Americans make any attempt to roll back the IRA a fool’s errand.”
