FSU Student Kills Two, Injures Six in Campus Shooting; Suspect Is Deputy’s Stepson

A tragic shooting near the Student Union at Florida State University (FSU) in Tallahassee on Thursday left two people dead and six others injured, according to local authorities.

The alleged gunman, 20-year-old Phoenix Ikner, a current FSU student and the stepson of a Leon County sheriff’s deputy, was shot by responding officers and taken into custody with non-life-threatening injuries. He remains hospitalized, law enforcement officials confirmed to ABC News.

Leon County Sheriff Walter McNeil revealed that Ikner had access to one of his mother’s personal firearms, which was among the weapons recovered at the scene. Investigators say Ikner was armed with both a handgun and a shotgun.

Sheriff McNeil described the suspect’s mother as a veteran deputy with more than 18 years of exemplary service in the department. He also noted that Ikner had previously been an active member of the sheriff’s Youth Advisory Council and had participated in various law enforcement training programs.

“Given his background, it’s not a surprise to us that he had access to weapons,” McNeil said.

The campus has since been secured, and police confirmed that the two individuals killed were not students at the university. Their identities have not yet been released.

Tallahassee Memorial HealthCare reported that it received six patients from the incident, all listed in fair condition.

FSU sophomore Paula Maldonado described the terrifying moments when the attack unfolded. “I heard yelling outside, and then the active threat alarm went off,” she said. “Everyone in my class quickly turned off the lights, barricaded the door with desks, and hid.”

She recounted the fear and confusion as officers entered the classroom. “At first, I thought it was the shooter—it was so scary,” she said. “Then another officer came in and told us to leave with our hands up.”

The investigation into the motive and full circumstances of the shooting is ongoing.
