Former New Jersey Senator Bob Menendez to Be Sentenced for Bribery and Acting as Foreign Agent for Egypt and Qatar

Former New Jersey Senator Bob Menendez is set to be sentenced on Wednesday after being found guilty in July of 16 charges, including bribery and acting as a foreign agent for Egypt and Qatar.

Menendez, 71, had sought a new trial, arguing that jurors were improperly given access to excluded evidence on a laptop. However, Judge Sidney Stein denied his request last week, ruling that the trial was fair and that it was unlikely the jury had knowingly accessed the restricted evidence.

Federal prosecutors are pushing for a 15-year prison sentence, citing the “rare gravity” of Menendez’s crimes. His legal team, however, is advocating for a significantly reduced sentence of no more than 27 months, along with community service. They argue that the proposed maximum sentence is “vindictive and cruel,” as it would also prevent him from being placed in a minimum-security facility.

Menendez began his political career in 1974 on the Union City, New Jersey, education board before being elected to the U.S. House in 1992. He later became a U.S. senator in 2006, a position he held until resigning after his conviction.
