The Controller-General of the Federal Fire Service (FFS), Abdulganiyu Jaji, has urged the installation of onboard cameras in tankers and articulated vehicles transporting flammable products to enhance safety and reduce accidents.
In a statement on Saturday ahead of the Eid-el-Fitr celebrations, Jaji emphasized that many tankers in Nigeria do not meet modern safety standards, contributing to frequent accidents, loss of life, and damage to public infrastructure.
“These substandard vehicles are responsible for rising accident statistics, leaving many families in distress,” he said.
Jaji explained that modern tankers come with anti-rollover systems, anti-spill devices, and internal and external cameras to monitor driver behavior. As a cost-effective alternative, he suggested installing onboard computers to track driving patterns such as speed and risky maneuvers.
The fire chief urged relevant government agencies to enforce stricter safety regulations, including the retrofitting of tankers with anti-skid systems, speed limiters, automatic emergency braking, and onboard monitoring technology.
He also encouraged citizens to familiarize themselves with local fire service contact details for quick emergency response.
