FG Upgrades Visa-on-Arrival Policy for Enhanced Security and Efficiency

The federal government has clarified that the visa-on-arrival policy has not been scrapped but upgraded to enhance efficiency and security.

Earlier, Minister of Interior Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo suggested plans to cancel the policy due to inefficiencies. However, in a statement on Tuesday, Zahrah Audu, Director-General of the Presidential Enabling Business Environment Council (PEBEC), confirmed that the policy is being restructured rather than abolished.

Tunji-Ojo explained that the revamped system will now require pre-arrival clearance through Interpol, criminal record databases, and other security agencies in real time. This aligns with PEBEC’s goal of streamlining travel processes and eliminating bureaucratic obstacles.

Under the new framework, travelers can apply for short-stay visas online and receive approval within 24 to 48 hours. Approved visas will be sent via email, eliminating the need for physical stickers upon arrival.

“This enhanced system aims to cut out inefficiencies, automate processes, and improve Nigeria’s ability to manage incoming travelers,” the minister stated.

The upgrade is expected to strengthen Nigeria’s business environment and attract more foreign investment by simplifying entry procedures while maintaining robust security measures.
