FG Should Prioritize Repairing Existing Roads Over New Projects  —   Peter Obi

Peter Obi, the Labour Party (LP) presidential candidate in the 2023 elections, has raised concerns over the poor condition of roads across Nigeria. In a post shared on his X page on Saturday, Obi called on all tiers of government to focus on completing and repairing existing road infrastructure rather than starting new projects, which he believes often end up abandoned.

Reflecting on his recent journey, Obi described the challenges he faced while traveling from Onitsha, Anambra State, to Anyigba, Kogi State. He said the trip took over seven hours and highlighted the need for urgent attention to road infrastructure.

“My journey from Onitsha to Anyigba by road once again underscored my consistent appeal,” Obi wrote. “All tiers of government must prioritize the repair and completion of existing road infrastructure rather than launching new projects that may not be completed anytime soon.”

Obi cited other troubling travel experiences, including a four-hour journey from Calabar to Uyo, which should have taken just one hour, and dangerous road conditions on routes such as Port Harcourt to Bayelsa, Warri to Benin, and Abuja to Kaduna.

The former Anambra governor acknowledged that these issues cannot be solved overnight but urged the government to focus its resources on fixing existing roads, easing the burden on commuters, and improving travel conditions across the country.
