The Federal Government has renamed the University of Abuja after Nigeria’s former Head of State, General Yakubu Gowon, in recognition of his contributions to the country’s stability.
This was announced on Monday, December 16, 2024, by the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, after the Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting presided over by President Bola Tinubu at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.
Idris stated that the University of Abuja, located in Gwagwalada, will now be known as Yakubu Gowon University, Abuja. He added that the government will formally write to the National Assembly for approval of the resolution. The renaming coincides with General Gowon’s recent 90th birthday celebration.
