FG Plans Emergency Evacuation of Citizens from Israel, Iran Amid Rising Tensions

The Federal Government of Nigeria has announced plans for the emergency evacuation of Nigerian citizens stranded in Israel and Iran, following a sharp escalation in hostilities between the two nations.

In a statement issued Tuesday night, Kimiebi Ebienfa, spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, said Nigeria’s embassies in Tel Aviv and Tehran have begun outreach efforts to locate affected citizens and coordinate a safe evacuation.

“The Federal Government is finalising arrangements for the emergency evacuation of stranded Nigerians in both countries,” the statement read.

Nigerians currently in the affected regions have been urged to remain calm, observe local security directives, and register with the nearest Nigerian mission to be included in the evacuation plan. Embassy officials are compiling lists of nationals and will provide continuous updates.

Ebienfa commended the dedication of Nigeria’s diplomatic teams in both countries, praising their efforts during what he described as “difficult times.”

The Federal Government reiterated its commitment to the safety and welfare of Nigerians abroad and is collaborating with international partners and local authorities to ensure a smooth evacuation process.

Beyond evacuation logistics, the Nigerian government called for an immediate ceasefire, urging all sides to embrace dialogue and adhere to international humanitarian law.

“Nigeria reiterates its call for the immediate cessation of hostilities and urges all parties involved to embrace dialogue, respect international humanitarian law, and prioritise the protection of civilians,” the ministry added.

The evacuation plans follow intense Israeli airstrikes launched on Friday targeting nearly 100 locations across Iran, reportedly resulting in the deaths of General Mohammad Bagheri, Iran’s Chief of Staff, and IRGC Commander Hossein Salami.

Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, denounced the strikes as a “declaration of war”, promising a “bitter and painful” retaliation fuelling fears of a broader regional war.

The Ministry said details regarding evacuation dates, locations, and procedures will be shared through official channels in the coming days.
