Godwin Emefiele, the suspended governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), was charged by the federal government of Nigeria on Thursday before a high court in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).
On a 20-count charge of illegal procurement, Emefiele was brought before Justice Hamza Muazu of the FCT high court in Maitama.
However, the first and second defendants’ absence, who are reportedly ill, caused the arraignment for the alleged N6.9 billion procurement fraud to be adjourned.
Sa’adatu Yaro, a female employee of CBN, is the second defendant.
Along with Emefiele, Yaro and her company April1616 Investment Limited will face 20 charges of procurement fraud, conspiracy, and conferring corrupt advantages on his associates.
Section 19 of the Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Act 2000 is violated by the crime.
However, Emefiele himself was present in court.
Yaro’s attorney informed the court that she became ill that morning, making it difficult for her to attend court.
The prosecution and the Department of State Services (DSS) did not object when the attorney requested a fresh date for the client’s court appearance.
The case was adjourned to August 23, 2023, by the Presiding Judge, Justice Hamza Muazu, in response to an application for adjournment.
