FG Declares Public Holiday to Honour Late President Buhari

The Federal Government has declared today, July 15, 2025, a public holiday in honour of the late former President Muhammadu Buhari, who died on Sunday in London.

In a statement signed by Magdalene Ajani, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Interior, the holiday aligns with the seven-day national mourning period earlier declared by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

The announcement, made on behalf of the government by Interior Minister Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, described the holiday as a tribute to Buhari’s legacy and service to Nigeria.

“President Muhammadu Buhari served Nigeria with dedication, integrity, and an unwavering commitment to unity and national progress,” Tunji-Ojo said.

He urged citizens to observe the day by reflecting on Buhari’s values, promoting peace, and strengthening national cohesion.

As part of the national mourning, flags are flying at half-mast across the country from Sunday, July 13, until the end of the week.

The government also extended condolences to Buhari’s family, the people of Katsina State, and all Nigerians, praying for the peaceful repose of his soul.

Meanwhile, Katsina State Governor Dikko Radda announced that the former president’s remains will arrive in Katsina by noon on Tuesday and will be buried at 2 p.m. in Daura, his hometown, following consultations with his family and associates in London.
