The federal government has declared Thursday, March 19, and Friday, March 20, 2026, as public holidays to mark this year’s Eid-el-Fitr celebration.
The announcement was made by the Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, Minister of Interior, in a statement on Tuesday. Eid-el-Fitr marks the conclusion of Ramadan, the Islamic holy month of fasting.
Tunji-Ojo congratulated Muslims on completing the period of fasting and urged them to uphold values of love, generosity, peace, tolerance, and sacrifice that Ramadan instills.
“The Federal Government of Nigeria has declared Thursday, 19th March, and Friday, 20th March 2026, as public holidays to mark the celebration of Eid-ul-Fitr, which signifies the end of the holy month of Ramadan,” the statement read.
He called on Nigerians to use the festive season to pray for the country’s peace, unity, and prosperity, while also encouraging responsible celebration and acts of kindness toward the less privileged.
The minister reaffirmed the government’s commitment to fostering national unity and peaceful coexistence across the country.
