The Federal Government has officially declared Thursday, June 12, 2025, a public holiday to commemorate Democracy Day, celebrating 26 years of uninterrupted civilian governance in Nigeria.
The announcement was made on Sunday by the Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, through a statement signed by Magdalene Ajani, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Interior.
Minister Tunji-Ojo congratulated Nigerians for their resilience, courage, and strength in sustaining democracy, describing June 12 as a powerful symbol of the nation’s journey towards justice, peace, and hope.
“June 12 represents our historic journey to building a nation where truth and justice reign, peace is sustained, and our future assured,” he said. “The last 26 years tell the story of our resilience, strength, and courage, and a hope renewed more than ever.”
He reaffirmed Nigeria’s ongoing commitment to democratic principles under President Bola Tinubu’s leadership, emphasizing the importance of citizens’ freely expressed choices in shaping the country’s political, economic, social, and cultural direction.
