The Federal Ministry of Works has announced a six-week partial closure of the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway to carry out urgent repairs on expansion joints at Kara Bridge, Magboro Bridge, and Arepo-Punch Bridge. The closure aims to resume critical rehabilitation work on the Lagos-bound section of Kara Bridge, previously suspended due to complaints about prolonged traffic congestion.
Ogun State Federal Controller of Works, Michael Komolafe, apologised to motorists for the inconvenience and assured that enhanced traffic management measures would be implemented to ensure safe and efficient repairs. He noted that the deteriorating expansion joints posed serious safety risks and had contributed to traffic accidents.
“The Minister of Works, David Umahi, has directed urgent repairs to prevent further incidents,” Komolafe said.
Project Update
Andy Duan, General Manager of CBC Construction Company, the contractor overseeing the project, provided details on the works:
- Repairs on the Lagos-bound sections of Magboro and Arepo-Punch bridges have been completed.
- At Kara Bridge, half of the Lagos-bound section has been repaired, and focus will now shift to the remaining portion.
- Full construction will begin Monday, with each bridge worked on in phases. Completion of half of each expansion joint is expected within a week.
Duan assured that traffic safety remains a priority, with barriers, warning signs, and lights installed to protect motorists and workers.
Traffic Advisory
Lagos State Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Kehinde Hamzat, urged motorists to exercise patience, comply with traffic regulations, and avoid driving against traffic. Violators will face sanctions.
“These repairs are essential to address failing expansion joints, which have created hazardous ditches and contributed to accidents, particularly on Kara Bridge,” Hamzat said.
The ministry encouraged motorists to plan their trips accordingly and follow posted traffic diversions during the construction period.
