Federal Ministry of Works Begins Emergency Repairs on Abuja-Kaduna Expressway

In response to the difficulties faced by commuters, the Federal Ministry of Works has initiated emergency repairs on damaged sections of the Abuja-Kaduna Dual Carriageway. The goal is to restore the road’s functionality and ease travel for road users.

M.A. Ahmed, the Ministry’s Director of Information, confirmed that the contractor, Messrs H&M (Nig.) Ltd, began work on October 2, 2024. The repairs target Section I of the expressway, stretching from Zuba in the Federal Capital Territory (kilometre 0+00) to Tafa on the Niger/Kaduna States’ border (kilometre 31+200). The project, costing N366 million, is expected to be completed within two weeks.

The project involves patching potholes and repairing severely damaged road sections. During an inspection on Saturday, Engr. Mohammed Goni, Director of Highways for the North Central Zone I, and Engr. Olufemi Adetunji, Special Projects Director (North), emphasized the need for the contractor to meet the deadline, assuring that no time extensions would be allowed.

The expressway, described as crucial for connecting Northern and Southern Nigeria, plays a key role in national economic growth. Engr. Goni also noted that after completing the current repairs, the remaining sections from Tafa to Kaduna will be awarded for repairs, in line with the government’s road infrastructure improvement agenda.

Mr. Lawrence Emmanuel, the project supervisor for H&M (Nig.) Ltd, reported that work has reached Dikko Junction in Niger State, with asphalting scheduled to begin on October 7, 2024. Despite heavy traffic slowing progress, Emmanuel committed to completing the project on time. Engr. Yakubu Usman, the Federal Controller of Works for the FCT, promised daily inspections to ensure the project is completed successfully.
