Kayode Fayemi, former Governor of Ekiti State, has expressed profound sorrow over the tragic death of 35 children in a stampede at an event in Ibadan, Oyo State, on Wednesday. The incident occurred at the Islamic High School in Basorun during a children’s carnival organized by Naomi Silekunola, the ex-wife of Enitan Ogunwusi, the Ooni of Ife.
In a statement released on Friday by Ahmad Sajoh, head of Fayemi’s media office, the former governor extended his condolences to the families of the victims and the Oyo State government. He described the incident as “heartbreaking” and lamented that it had “cast a pall of sadness over the Christmas celebrations.”
“It is with a heavy heart that I received the devastating news of the tragic loss of over 30 children in a stampede during a Christmas event in Ibadan,” Fayemi said. “This heartbreaking incident, which has also left many children injured, stands as one of the most devastating incidents involving children in our nation’s history.”
Fayemi emphasized the need for event organizers to adhere to safety protocols and global best practices when managing large crowds. “As a parent and leader, I am deeply shaken by this unprecedented tragedy. The loss of even one child is unbearable; the loss of over thirty young souls is unspeakable,” he remarked. “This incident underscores the critical need for event organizers to prioritize safety and adhere to global standards in planning gatherings, especially those involving large crowds.”
He called for a thorough investigation into the incident and urged authorities to hold those responsible accountable. Fayemi also recommended that state governments consider banning non-academic events in public schools unless strict safety measures are enforced.
In his closing remarks, Fayemi offered prayers for the injured and the grieving families and called for increased precautions to prevent similar tragedies in the future.
