Kingsley Obiora, the deputy governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) in charge of economic policy, was reportedly arrested by the Department of State Services (DSS).
The CBN deputy governor is said to have spent four nights in the DSS’s custody, according to Peoples Emefiele
According to information gathered, Godwin Emefiele, the suspended Central Bank governor, is at the center of allegations of financial mismanagement being investigated by the secret police.
He was being sought after as a key witness against his boss, according to a source familiar with the arrest.
Abbas Masanawa, another top CBN official, was recently arrested while authorities investigated the depth of Emefiele’s suspected misconduct.
The publication did not promptly hear back from the DSS and CBN about Obiora’s detention, which officials said was not entirely unexpected given his knowledge of CBN’s policy decisions.
Obiora, who was born on March 6, 1976, served as the International Monetary Fund (IMF) Policy Chief and counseled former finance minister Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala. He served as Emefiele’s adviser up until March 2, 2020, when he was confirmed to the position of one of the four deputy governors of the Central Bank of Nigeria.
Recall that Emefiele, who was appointed as CBN governor in June 2014, has been in DSS since June 10, 2023, a day after he was contentiously removed from office by President Bola Tinubu.
