At least eight people have died after a hot air balloon caught fire and crashed in southern Brazil, officials confirmed on Sunday. The incident occurred in Praia Grande, a popular tourist destination in Santa Catarina state, when the balloon, carrying 21 people, burst into flames mid-flight.
According to the Santa Catarina state government, 13 people, including the pilot, survived and were taken to local hospitals for treatment. Authorities confirmed there are no missing persons.
Governor Jorginho Mello, currently on a diplomatic visit to China, said in a statement on social media that the full resources of the state had been mobilized to support rescue efforts and assist affected families.
“We are devastated—what happened is a terrible tragedy,” Mello said in a video message. “An investigation is underway, but right now our priority is helping the victims and their loved ones.”
Police officer Tiago Luiz Lemos, speaking at the crash site, said the fire reportedly began inside the balloon’s basket. “The pilot, who survived, said he initiated a descent once the fire broke out and urged passengers to jump when the balloon neared the ground,” Lemos explained. “Some managed to escape, but others couldn’t. The balloon briefly rose again due to its weight before crashing down.”
The crash occurred near a local health facility in Praia Grande, a city renowned for its picturesque scenery and hot air balloon excursions.
Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva offered condolences via social media, expressing “solidarity with the families of the victims.” He also affirmed that federal, state, and local agencies were working together on the response and pledged ongoing support.
Investigations into what caused the fire and subsequent crash remain ongoing.
