The Sultan of Sokoto and President-General of the Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs, Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar, has declared Friday, March 20, 2026, as the first day of Shawwal 1447AH and the commencement of Eid-el-Fitr celebrations.
In a statement issued by Sambo Wali Junaidu, Chairman of the Advisory Committee on Religious Affairs, Sultanate Council, Sokoto, in collaboration with the National Moon Sighting Committee, no credible reports of the Shawwal crescent moon sighting were received nationwide on Wednesday, March 18, 2026—the 29th day of Ramadan.
Consequently, Thursday, March 19, 2026, will serve as the 30th and final day of Ramadan 1447AH.
The Sultan congratulated Nigerian Muslims on successfully completing the holy month of Ramadan and urged continued prayers for national unity, peace, and development.
The Federal Government, through Minister of Interior Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, had earlier declared Thursday, March 19, and Friday, March 20, 2026, as public holidays to mark Eid-el-Fitr. The announcement was contained in a statement signed by Permanent Secretary Magdalene Ajani.
Saudi Arabia also confirmed Friday, March 20, as the start of Eid al-Fitr after completing 30 days of Ramadan, as reported by the Saudi Press Agency.
The Islamic lunar calendar determines the end of Ramadan and the start of Shawwal through moon sighting, aligning with one of Islam’s five pillars—fasting during daylight hours, alongside charity to the less privileged.
