The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has announced Egypt as the new host of the 2025 U-20 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) after Cote d’Ivoire withdrew just a month before the tournament.
In a statement released on Thursday evening, CAF cited “unforeseen circumstances” as the reason for Cote d’Ivoire’s decision to pull out of hosting the competition, originally scheduled for April 26 to May 18. No further explanation was given for the withdrawal.
Egypt, which hosted the previous edition, will now take up the responsibility again, with the tournament rescheduled to kick off on April 27.
Nigeria’s Flying Eagles have been drawn into Group B, where they will face the new hosts, Morocco, and South Africa. The top two teams from each group will automatically qualify for the knockout stage, while the best two third-placed teams will also secure quarter-final spots.
The semi-finalists of the tournament will earn automatic qualification for the 2025 U-20 World Cup in Chile.
In the last edition of the U-20 AFCON, Nigeria finished third after losing to The Gambia in the semi-finals.
