Former Anambra State governor and immediate past Minister of Labour and Employment, Dr. Chris Ngige, has been arrested in Abuja by operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and is currently being questioned by the Commission.
Ngige’s detention was confirmed late Wednesday night in a statement issued by his former media aide, Fred Chukwulobe, following online speculation that the former minister had been kidnapped. Chukwulobe dismissed the rumours, clarifying that Ngige voluntarily honoured the EFCC invitation and remains in safe custody.
He stated:
“Former Governor of Anambra State and immediate past minister of labour and employment, Dr. Chris Ngige, is with the EFCC. More details later.”
While the EFCC has yet to release an official statement on the grounds for the arrest, sources familiar with the situation say the Commission is probing several financial matters linked to Ngige’s time in public office.
Ngige has made headlines recently after his convoy was attacked by armed men in Anambra State last month. Although he was not in the vehicle during the incident, the attack renewed concerns about insecurity in parts of the state.
His arrest has now triggered fresh political conversations nationwide, as observers await clarity on the specific allegations the EFCC may unveil in the coming days.
