The Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Ola Olukoyede, revealed that two staff members of the agency were recently dismissed for alleged corruption and will face prosecution. Olukoyede made this announcement during the 6th Annual Criminal Law Review Conference organized by the Rule of Law Development Foundation in Abuja.
At the five-day event, themed “Optimising the Administration of Criminal Justice in Nigeria: How to Navigate Emerging and Systemic Challenges of Insecurity and Economic Hardship,” Olukoyede emphasized the importance of integrity in law enforcement and governance. He stated, “Just two weeks ago, I had cause to dismiss two staff. You can’t be fighting corruption and have your hands dirty. He who comes to equity must have clean hands.” He added that the dismissed staff would not only be removed but also prosecuted, reinforcing the high standard the EFCC holds for itself.
Olukoyede stressed that integrity is paramount within the EFCC, stating, “Any staff that is corrupt, I will show you the way out.” He acknowledged the presence of systemic challenges within the organization but likened them to “Judas among the 12,” urging Nigerians to report any misconduct by EFCC staff, assuring that such reports would be met with decisive action.
Reflecting on his personal experience, Olukoyede shared that he had undergone a two-year investigation while serving as the EFCC secretary, which further strengthened his commitment to upholding the rule of law. “I know what it means to be investigated, which is why I am committed to following the rule of law and ensuring that this agency stimulates the economy through its mandate,” he said.
The EFCC chairman also highlighted the need for a review of the ethics, values, and standards governing legal practice in Nigeria to curb corruption. He welcomed constructive criticism of the EFCC, emphasizing the need to strengthen institutions through responsible engagement.
Olukoyede reaffirmed his commitment to rooting out corruption within the EFCC and ensuring that the agency remains a credible and effective force in Nigeria’s ongoing battle against corruption.
