Edo State Governor, Monday Okpebholo, has expressed his administration’s readiness to partner with the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation Limited (NNPCL) on the construction of a 10,000 barrel-per-day condensate refinery in the state.
Okpebholo gave the assurance while receiving NNPCL’s Executive Vice President for Downstream, Alhaji Mumuni Dagazia, alongside members of his management team.
The governor described the proposed refinery as a major investment aligned with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, noting that it would generate employment, reduce poverty, and strengthen Edo State’s industrial base.
“We are delighted to welcome this major investment to Edo State. My administration is committed to creating jobs and reducing poverty, in line with the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. This is a huge step for Edo, and we are proud to be part of it,” Okpebholo said.
He assured NNPCL of the state government’s full support for the project, pledging the provision of land, Certificates of Occupancy (C of O), security, and other necessary logistics to ensure its successful execution.
“Security will not be an issue. We are committed to protecting investments and ensuring Edo State remains safe for business. Our political will is fully behind this initiative,” the governor added.
NNPCL had first announced plans for the condensate refinery in 2019, stating that feasibility studies had been completed at the time. The refinery is designed to specifically produce Premium Motor Spirit (PMS), also known as petrol.
The project is expected to be completed within 24 to 36 months and will be located across Oredo and Orhionmwon Local Government Areas of the state. When completed, the facility is projected to produce about 20 truckloads of PMS and 10 truckloads of Automotive Gas Oil (AGO) daily to serve Edo State and neighbouring regions.
Speaking during the visit, Alhaji Mumuni described the condensate refinery as a sustainable project aimed at revenue generation, job creation, industrial growth, and the overall development of Edo State.
Also speaking, NNPCL’s Chief Downstream Investment Officer, Mr. Ikedichi Dick-Nwoke, said the project would position Edo State as a major energy and industrial hub in the South-South region. He added that the refinery would boost investor confidence, align with Governor Okpebholo’s industrialisation agenda, and significantly expand employment opportunities for Edo residents.
