The Edo State Government has ordered all public servants and political appointees intending to contest elective offices in the 2027 general elections to resign their appointments on or before March 1, 2026.
The directive was issued in a special government announcement signed by the Secretary to the State Government, Umar Musa Ikhilor, in compliance with the provisions of the Electoral Act (Amendment) 2026.
According to the statement, any officer planning to participate in party primaries or any stage of the electoral process must first tender his or her resignation within the stipulated timeline.
The government explained that the move is intended to prevent potential disqualification of aspirants by relevant electoral authorities and to ensure strict adherence to statutory requirements.
Ikhilor noted that the measure is also aimed at promoting fairness, transparency, and a level playing field for all aspirants, while preserving the integrity and neutrality of public institutions.
The statement further reminded public office holders that their official duties must not be compromised by partisan political activities, urging all affected officers to take immediate steps to comply with the directive.
