Edo State Governor, Sen. Monday Okpebholo, has directed the heads of various security agencies in the state to ramp up efforts in combating criminal activities, including cult-related violence, which has led to at least seven killings over the past two weeks.
The violent clashes, attributed to cult groups, have occurred in areas such as Ugbague, Nevis, Dawson, Total in New Benin, as well as Iyaro, Wire Road, Ring Road, and Sapele Road.
The governor’s directive followed a closed-door inaugural security meeting held on Monday night at the Government House in Benin City. According to Fred Itua, the Chief Press Secretary to the governor, Okpebholo emphasized the administration’s commitment to safeguarding residents and cracking down on cultism, which he described as unacceptable.
“The rate of cultism is not acceptable to my administration. We do not want to lose anybody, and we will be firm about this. We have ordered security agencies to collaborate and ensure that Edo is safe for all, but not safe for criminals,” Governor Okpebholo stated.
The governor called for more decisive actions to eliminate criminal elements from the state, with a particular focus on Benin City. He reiterated that his administration would leave no room for criminals to operate freely.
Edo State Commissioner of Police, Umoru Peter Ozigi, who also attended the meeting, assured the public that security agencies are working closely together to address the surge in violence and would continue to receive support from the governor to maintain peace and safety across the state.
