Dele Momodu, media mogul and prominent chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has accused some PDP governors of covertly working in favour of President Bola Tinubu by rejecting a proposed opposition coalition ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Appearing on Arise Television on Monday, Momodu reacted to the recent declaration by PDP governors ruling out any merger or alliance with other political parties. The move comes amid growing efforts by opposition heavyweights — including Atiku Abubakar, Peter Obi, and Rabiu Kwankwaso — to unite in a bid to unseat the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the next election.
Momodu stressed the importance of unity, warning that no single opposition figure or party has the capacity to defeat Tinubu’s APC alone. “Atiku cannot do it alone, Peter Obi cannot do it alone, and Rabiu Kwankwaso cannot do it alone,” he said. “Opposition leaders are very determined this time around to work together.”
He likened the current situation to the 2015 election, when several parties joined forces to oust the PDP from power. “If our governors are saying no, we don’t want to go into a coalition, then it means that surreptitiously, you are probably working for a Tinubu presidency,” Momodu warned.
He accused some political leaders of lacking the courage to stand against the ruling party, claiming they are too easily intimidated by threats of arrest or probes from institutions like the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).
“People must learn from history; a bully only respects a bully,” Momodu said. “But all of us are already behaving like chickens. Anything happens, and people panic.”
In a final warning, Momodu said any politician contemplating defection to the ruling party should be prepared for political obscurity. “Any governor or any senator or house member who may be tempted to just jump ship may jump to the bottom of the Atlantic Ocean,” he declared.
His comments come amid rising political tensions and realignments as Nigeria inches closer to the 2027 elections.
