Deji Adeyanju Slams Tinubu: Fuel Subsidy Removal Is His Worst Decision

Lawyer and human rights activist Deji Adeyanju has described President Bola Tinubu’s decision to remove fuel subsidy on May 29, 2023, as the worst policy move of his administration, alleging that it has brought hardship to citizens while enriching state governors.

In a strongly worded post on X titled “All the Money Saved From Subsidy Stolen,” Adeyanju argued that the controversial decision has delivered no meaningful benefit to ordinary Nigerians, despite generating increased revenues for state governments.

“The worst decision of the Tinubu administration was removing fuel subsidy. The governors now have more than four times more to loot. And it’s still business as usual. Nothing has changed,” Adeyanju stated.

He lamented the lack of tangible development projects across the states despite the surge in allocations since the subsidy removal, accusing governors of mismanaging the additional funds.

“You can’t see any project in the states equivalent of money collected before removal of subsidy. That’s why the governors are defecting to APC while the people suffer,” he added.

Adeyanju further criticized the administration’s failure to cushion the economic blow on the masses, asserting that while citizens endure worsening conditions, political elites continue to benefit.

“It’s the governors who are enjoying the dividends of democracy under Tinubu. The removal of subsidy is affecting the economy and the people badly,” he said.

His remarks come amid growing discontent over the state of the economy, inflation, and the perceived lack of accountability in how public funds are being utilized since the removal of fuel subsidies.
