Deborah Samuel: Professor Leads 34 Lawyers In Court To Defend Suspected Sokoto Student Killers

Professor Mansur Ibrahim headed a team of 34 lawyers who appeared in court on Monday to represent two suspects arrested in the death of Deborah Samuel.

Following their arrest last week for their involvement in the horrible murder of Deborah Samuel, a student at the Shehu Shagari College of Education in Sokoto State, the accused were charged in court.

She was stoned to death and then burned by her colleagues for alleged blasphemy against Prophet Muhammad in a WhatsApp group.

Bilyaminu Aliyu and Aminu Hukunci, the suspects, were taken before a Sokoto Chief Magistrate’s Court for their suspected involvement in the crime.

When the allegations against them were read in court, they pled not guilty.

Inspector Khalil Musa, the police prosecutor, informed the court that an investigation was underway. He asked the court for a new date so that the police could finish their investigation.

After the presentations, Prof. Ibrahim, who led the defendants’ defense team, did not object to the prosecutor’s motion and instead sought for bail for his clients on liberal grounds.

The trial judge (name omitted for security reasons) reserved his decision on the bail application but remanded the accused in the Sokoto Correctional Center.

The court then adjourned a ruling on the application until a later date that would be conveyed to the attorneys.
