Dangote Accuses Oil Cabal of Sabotage, Vows to Overcome Resistance

Aliko Dangote, President of Dangote Industries Limited (DIL), has accused entrenched interests in Nigeria’s oil and gas sector of fighting to derail his multi-billion-dollar petrochemicals project.

Speaking at an investor forum in Lagos over the weekend, Dangote said the “cabal”—which profited for years from government-subsidized oil imports—continues to sabotage the $20 billion refinery in Lekki, Lagos.

“For a very, very long time, those that have made a lot of money from government-subsidised oil imports into Nigeria were the ones trying to sabotage the $20 billion worth of refinery,” Dangote said, according to Semafor. He added that these groups are also funding opposition to President Bola Tinubu’s removal of petrol subsidies.

Despite the resistance, Dangote expressed confidence in overcoming the challenges. “We’re fighting, and the fight is not yet finished. But I have been fighting all my life, and I am ready and 100 percent sure I will win at the end of the day,” he stated.

This isn’t the first time Dangote has raised concerns. In June last year, he warned that both local and foreign “mafia” had made repeated attempts to sabotage the refinery’s progress. “Well, I knew there would be a fight. But I didn’t know that the mafia in oil are stronger than the mafia in drugs. Yes, it’s a fact,” he said at the time.

The 650,000 barrels-per-day refinery and petrochemicals project is seen as a transformative venture for Nigeria’s economy.
