Court Nullifies Senate Minority Leader Mwadkwon Election

Senator Simon Mwadkwon
The election of Senator Simon Mwadkwon, the Senate Minority Leader, has been nullified by the Appeal Court sitting in Abuja.
The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) was found to have improperly nominated Mwadkwon as its candidate, and the court ruled his election to be invalid in a decision on Sunday.
As a result, the court mandated that a new election be held within ninety days to choose the Plateau North Senatorial District’s new representative.
The PDP was found to have violated the Electoral Act since twelve Local Government Areas (LGA) did not attend the party’s organized congress, according to the court’s ruling.
It also cited non-compliance with a subsisting court order as a key factor in the decision.
As per the appeal court’s declaration, the PDP will not be taking part in the rerun polls for the Plateau North senatorial seat since the court ruled that the pursuit of due process requires a fresh election.
The verdict came following a legal battle between Gyang Yaya Zi and the Labour Party (LP) as the 1st and 2nd Appellants, and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Mwadkwon, and the PDP as the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd respondents
