Court Approves DSS Request To Detain Tukur Mamu For 60 More Days

The filed motion to detain Tukur Mamu the publisher of Desert Herald, for additional 60 days by the Department of State Services (DSS) has been approved.

Justice Nkeonye Maha, the presiding judge, made the decision on Tuesday in response to an ex-parte motion brought by Ahmed Magaji, the DSS’s counsel.

The DSS requested the court to approve its request in the motion with the file number FHC/ABJ/CS/1617/2022 and the date September 12 so that it could wrap up the investigation against Mamu.

Recall that the Kaduna train attack negotiator was apprehended at the Kano International Airport after his return from Egypt, where he had been held while on route to Saudi Arabia for the smaller hajj.

Mamu, an aide to a popular Islamic cleric, Ahmad Gumi, has been involved in negotiations for the release of persons abducted during an attack on a train in Kaduna, in March 2022.

Reacting in a statement on Sunday, DSS spokesperson, Peter Afunaya, said the security agency would not be distracted by “skewed utterances”.

He described the outcome of the agency’s investigation of Mamu as “mind-boggling”.

Commenting on his arrest, Gumi had said detaining Mamu is an act of terrorism and that the DSS should either charge him to a court or release him.
