The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has issued a strong warning against the spraying, hawking, mutilation, or counterfeiting of the Naira, urging Nigerians to treat the currency with respect as it is a key symbol of national identity.
Mrs. Hakama Sidi Ali, Acting Director of the Corporate Communications Department, made the remarks during the CBN’s Special Day at the 36th Enugu International Trade Fair. She stressed the importance of maintaining the integrity of the Naira, saying, “We urge you to see Naira as our critical symbol of national identity. Respect and keep it clean. Do not spray, hawk, mutilate or counterfeit the Naira.”
Mrs. Ali also highlighted Nigeria’s $6.83 billion balance of payments surplus at the end of 2024, underscoring the CBN’s ongoing efforts to stabilize the macroeconomy and ensure a resilient banking system.
She further noted the remarkable progress in Nigeria’s payment system, which has gained global recognition. This progress, according to Mrs. Ali, plays a crucial role in accelerating financial inclusion and expanding payment possibilities for Nigerians.
