CAN Condemns Plateau Killings, Calls for Justice and National Unity

The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has strongly condemned the April 4, 2025, attacks in Bokkos and Mangu Local Government Areas of Plateau State, which left many dead and displaced. Describing the incidents as “senseless acts of violence,” CAN President, Archbishop Daniel Okoh, said the killings were a “gross violation of human dignity and the sanctity of life,” warning that the continued unrest poses a serious threat to Nigeria’s peace and unity.

In a Sunday statement, Archbishop Okoh called on security agencies to swiftly bring the perpetrators to justice and urged all levels of government to redouble efforts to protect citizens and restore calm. “The continued loss of lives in such tragic circumstances is simply unacceptable,” he stated, offering prayers for the victims’ families and the injured.

Stressing the need for servant leadership, Okoh urged political leaders to prioritize national welfare over personal ambition, especially in the face of insecurity, economic hardship, and widespread displacement.

In a message of national solidarity, he encouraged Nigerians to rise above ethnic, religious, and political divides, and to embrace their shared identity “as one people under God.”

Reflecting on the meaning of Palm Sunday, which marks the beginning of Holy Week, Okoh called on Nigerians to draw from the peace, humility, and sacrificial love embodied by Jesus Christ. “Palm Sunday is a powerful symbol of peace, humility, and hope. Just as the diverse crowds in Jerusalem were united in hope, so too must we come together to heal our land,” he said.

He concluded with a personal challenge to all Nigerians to be agents of peace in their homes, communities, and workplaces, turning worship into a tangible commitment to national healing.
