Buhari Still Scheduled For UK Medical Trip, Set Out On Sunday – Presidency

The Presidency has revealed why President Muhammadu Buhari  returned to Nigeria on Friday after a visit to Kenya.

Nigerians had expected him to go to the United Kingdom for a medical check-up following the United Nations Environmental Programme at 50 in Nairobi, Kenya, as his media assistant, Femi Adesina, had indicated.

While announcing Buhari’s trip to Kenya, Adesina said the President will fly from Nairobi to the United Kingdom after the UNEP event, where he would spend a maximum of two weeks attending to his health.

“From Kenya, President Buhari will proceed to London for routine medical checks that will last for a maximum of two weeks,” the statement had said.

But, much to the astonishment of many, the President returned to Nigeria on Friday, fueling suspicion that he had canceled his trip to the United Kingdom.

Mallam Garba Shehu, the President’s Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, indicated that President will still travel to the United Kingdom.

He stated that the President was scheduled to complete his itinerary on Saturday before proceeding to Nigeria, where he will begin his travel to the United Kingdom on Sunday.

“The first plan was that the President would end his program in Kenya on Saturday,” Shehu told NAN.

“Nothing has changed about his planned trip to London; it is still as earlier planned. He will leave for London on Sunday. There’s no need for any anxiety.

“What happened was that the President was able to finish his program in Nairobi earlier than expected. That’s why he returned on Friday. He will still go to the UK on Sunday.”

Buhari attended the Special Session to mark the United Nations’ body’s 50th anniversary while in Kenya.

Buhari said, “As we celebrate the 50th anniversary of UNEP’s existence, we laud the efforts of UNEP and encourage broader action to overcome climate change, biodiversity, rising levels of pollution and waste being three major crises threatening our planet.”

In Nairobi, the President met with Mr. Ibrahim Thiaw, Executive Secretary of the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification.
