Bashir Ahmad, the former personal assistant to President Muhammadu Buhari for new media has been appointed as the Special Assistant to the President for Digital Communications.
According to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), Boss Mustapha, Secretary to the Government of the Federation, approved the appointment in a letter of appointment dated July 20 and addressed to Mr. Ahmad.
In Mr. Mustapha’s letter, the appointment became effective on July 19.
In accordance with the presidential directive requesting all political office holders to resign if they desire to run for elective offices, Mr. Ahmad had left his previous position as the President’s personal assistant.
The presidential media aide lost his bid to secure the ticket of the All Progressives Congress at the party’s primaries for Gaya, Ajingi, Albasu Federal Constituency.
Mr Ahmad had frowned at the way and manner the party’s primary was conducted, saying it was fraught with fraud.
The only presidential aide’recalled’ by the president since the end of the APC primaries is believed to be the person in charge of the president’s social media handles.
The president has subsequently replaced all of the cabinet members and presidential aides with the exception of Mr. Ahmad, who resigned to compete in the APC primaries but was unsuccessful in getting party tickets.
Some social commentators who spoke to NAN about the media assistant’s promotion to the post of Special Assistant claimed that Mr. Ahmad had successfully managed the social media space as a Personal Assistant prior to his resignation.
