Buhari Delays Signing Electoral Bill Till Friday

The signing of the revised Electoral Act Amendment Bill by President Muhammadu Buhari has been postponed till Friday, February 25.

In an interview with Channels Television on Wednesday, a source close to the Presidency revealed the new date.

President Buhari will sign the revised document around 12 p.m. on Friday, according to the source, who had previously stated that he would sign the bill on Wednesday.

He said, “All these anxieties will disappear by Friday afternoon. He will be signing the bill around noon of that day. I believe he has taken his time so that the Act can be as unassailable as much as possible.”

Meanwhile, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has revealed why President Buhari has refused to sign the new election bill into law.

Debo Ologunagba, a spokesman for the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), claimed President Muhammadu Buhari has refused to sign the law because he is afraid of his party, the All Progressives Congress (APC), losing the 2023 general elections.

The PDP spokesman added that Buhari’s delay in signing the reworked electoral bill is a move to erect roadblocks to the passage of the document into law.

Ologunagba asserted that the electronic transmission of election results will eliminate APC’s plans to manipulate the system, militarise the process, alter election results at the collation centre and foist itself again into power against the will of Nigerians.

According to Ologunagba, the President’s refusal to sign the electoral bill constitutes an obstruction to the democratic principle of credible elections.
